Regional Significance

Uganda is a key regional actor in the Eastern Africa region due to its location in the Great Lakes region and its role in regional security operations. It has been heavily involved in peace missions in neighbouring states, particularly Somalia, and remains central to regional counterterrorism efforts and hosting large refugee populations from countries including South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan.

 Key Challenges

  • Governance deficit — Museveni among Africa's longest-serving leaders; elections due 2026
  • Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) insurgency in western Uganda / DRC border area
  • South Sudan and DRC border insecurity
  • Youth unemployment
  • International criticism and sanctions risk over 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act
  • Humanitarian burden of hosting over 1.5 million refugees

 Interesting Facts

Uganda’s Lake Albert oil fields could fundamentally transform its economy when commercial production begins (projected 2025–2027).
