Interesting Fact

Kenya is the largest economy in the Greater Horn of Africa and Africa’s 6th largest overall; Nairobi is known as ‘Silicon Savannah’ for its role as a leading regional technology and innovation hub.

Key Challenges

Regional Significance

  • High public debt and fiscal consolidation pressures
  • Youth unemployment and civic unrest (Gen-Z protests, 2024–2025)
  • Historical land injustices and unresolved ethnic grievances
  • Governance accountability and corruption

Kenya is a key regional actor in East Africa and the Horn of Africa, serving as a major commercial, technological, and logistical hub. Nairobi also acts as a key diplomatic hub, hosting major United Nations offices and other international organisations. Through the Port of Mombasa, the country functions as the principal maritime gateway for landlocked states in the region. It also plays an active role in regional mediation and peace and security processes across the Horn and Great Lakes regions.
