Regional Significance

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a central geopolitical actor in the Great Lakes Region due to its vast territory, mineral wealth (including cobalt and copper critical to global energy transitions), and its ongoing instability. Ongoing conflict in its eastern regions continues to generate refugee flows and cross-border insecurity affecting neighbouring states.

 Key Challenges

  • Active armed conflict in eastern DRC (M23, FDLR, ADF insurgencies)
  • Catastrophic humanitarian crisis millions internally displaced
  • Governance deficits, corruption, and impunity across institutions
  • Infrastructure deficit across one of the world's largest countries
  • Mineral wealth exploited without commensurate local development

 Interesting Facts

The Democratic Republic of the Congo holds the world’s largest known cobalt reserves, critical to global electric vehicle batteries and the green energy transition.
