Regional Significance
Ethiopia is an anchor state in the Horn of Africa and a regional and continental diplomatic and economic hub. As host of the African Union headquarters, it plays a central role in continental security, mediation, trade, and geopolitical relations. It is also a key actor in Nile Basin politics, while internal conflicts and tensions with neighbours, including Eritrea, continue to shape regional instability.
Key Challenges
- Incomplete implementation of the 2022 Pretoria Peace Agreement (Tigray region)
- Ongoing insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia regions
- Sea-access ambitions — 2024 Somaliland deal caused a major regional diplomatic crisis
- Nile water dispute with Egypt and Sudan over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
- High public debt and IMF programme conditionalities
- Ethnic federalism driving inter-communal and separatist violence
