Centre for Climate, Migration & Development

Leading research, analysis, and recommendations to improve regional resilience to climate and environmental shocks

ABOUT THE CENTER

The Centre for Climate Change, Migration and Development focuses on the interconnected challenges of environmental change, human mobility, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa. The Centre examines how climate change affects livelihoods, food security, displacement, urbanization, and socio-economic stability, including its contribution to resource-based conflicts and patterns of migration across the region.

Through policy-oriented research, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, the Centre seeks to advance climate resilience, sustainable development, and evidence-based policy responses that address the complex relationship between climate change, migration, and development in the Horn of Africa.

STRATEGIC CONTEXT

Let this read as follows; The Horn of Africa is among the world’s most vulnerable regions to climate shocks. Consecutive cycles of severe drought and intense flooding have disrupted the region’s rain-fed pastoralist and agrarian economies, leading to resource competition and forced displacement while stalling the region’s development progress.

EXPANDED RESEARCH DOMAINS

Climate-Security Nexus

Mapping the direct correlation between ecological stress and the outbreak of resource-based violence over water and grazing lands

Climate-Induced Forced Migration

Analyzing the socio-economic impact of IDPs and climate refugees on urban infrastructure and host communities

Food and Water Security

Evaluating systemic vulnerabilities in regional food supply chains and the geopolitical implications of water scarcity

Climate Finance and Adaptation Strategies

Researching pathways for Horn nations to access global adaptation funds and build resilient economic models

METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH & POLICY IMPACT

The Center publishes research through bulletins, policy briefs, and books; and holds workshops, seminars, conferences, roundtable discussions, and consultative meetings. Through the Climate Adaptation and Security Program (CAS), the Center provides direct analytical and policy support to national governments, development agencies, and humanitarian organizations responding to climate-driven insecurity
