Our Centres

Six specialised centres driving evidence-based research, policy analysis, and strategic thinking across the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.

The Centre for Defence and Security provides strategic analysis of defence challenges and security threats in the Horn of Africa, including conventional and asymmetric conflict dynamics and emerging non-state threats such as armed groups and the proliferation of drones. Through its research, programmes, and the annual Horn of Africa Security Dialogue, it generates policy-relevant insights for governments and security practitioners.
EXPLORE CENTRE
The Centre conducts research and analysis on the diplomatic and foreign policy decisions of Horn of Africa countries and their impact on interstate relations in the region, including bilateral ties, multilateral frameworks, and regional integration efforts.
EXPLORE CENTRE
The Centre for Governance, Statecraft and Conflict Management examines governance systems, peacebuilding processes, and conflict-related developments in the Horn of Africa, with a focus on electoral politics, changes in political leadership, and state institutions. It provides policy analysis and capacity-building programmes for governments and practitioners engaged in governance reform and conflict management.
EXPLORE CENTRE
The Centre for Transnational Crimes and Strategic Threats examines emerging strategic and asymmetric threats in the Horn of Africa, with a focus on cross-border illicit networks, armed group activity, and illicit flows of goods, arms, and people. Its work analyses the connections between criminal economies and armed actors, contributing to stronger regional and national responses to transnational crime.
EXPLORE CENTRE
The Centre for the Study of Terrorism, Violent Extremism and Radicalisation analyses the drivers of radicalisation and patterns of violent extremism in the Horn of Africa. It produces research and policy analysis to inform prevention and response efforts, including through initiatives such as the Prevention of Terrorism Programme and the INFORM Initiative, which support community-level approaches to countering violent extremism.
EXPLORE CENTRE
The Centre for Climate Change, Migration, and Development analyses the intersections of climate change, climate-induced displacement, and food insecurity alongside broader socio-economic pressures in the Horn of Africa. It produces research and policy analysis that supports climate resilience and informs responses to climate-related security and humanitarian challenges in the region.
