Regional Significance

Tanzania is a key regional actor in East Africa and the Great Lakes region due to its Indian Ocean coastline, which serves as a critical gateway for landlocked neighbours to global markets. As a member of both the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community, Tanzania acts as a political bridge between the two regional blocs.

 Key Challenges

  • Political tensions resulting from recent (2025) elections
  • Poverty reduction — significant rural-urban disparities remain
  • DRC conflict spillover affecting the Dar es Salaam transit corridor
  • Climate change vulnerability — drought, flooding, and rising sea levels

 Interesting Facts

Tanzania is the only EAC member also in SADC, making it a bridge between East and Southern Africa.
