Regional Significance

Somalia holds major regional significance in the Horn of Africa due to its strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, near key global shipping routes. Its long coastline and weak maritime enforcement have made it central to concerns over piracy and illicit trafficking. Internal instability largely driven by Al-Shabaab has placed it at the centre of regional security operations, including African Union stabilisation missions such as AUSSOM.

 Key Challenges

  • Al-Shabaab insurgency — regained territory in 2024–2025; assassination attempt on president (March 2025)
  • Constitutional and electoral crisis — federal government vs. member state power-sharing
  • Puntland and Jubaland suspended recognition of federal authority (2024–2025)
  • Acute food insecurity — 4.4 million people requiring urgent food aid (late 2025)
  • Somaliland independence question; Israel's April 2026 recognition creating regional friction
  • Declining international donor confidence and reduced security mission funding

 Interesting Facts

Somalia has the longest coastline in mainland Africa, stretching over 3,300 kilometres along the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, giving it significant strategic importance in regional and global shipping routes.
