Regional Significance

Ethiopia is an anchor state in the Horn of Africa and a regional and continental diplomatic and economic hub. As host of the African Union headquarters, it plays a central role in continental security, mediation, trade, and geopolitical relations. It is also a key actor in Nile Basin politics, while internal conflicts and tensions with neighbours, including Eritrea, continue to shape regional instability.

 Key Challenges

  • Incomplete implementation of the 2022 Pretoria Peace Agreement (Tigray region)
  • Ongoing insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia regions
  • Sea-access ambitions — 2024 Somaliland deal caused a major regional diplomatic crisis
  • Nile water dispute with Egypt and Sudan over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
  • High public debt and IMF programme conditionalities
  • Ethnic federalism driving inter-communal and separatist violence

 Interesting Facts

Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in Africa; sea access is its top foreign policy priority.
