Bobi Wine told CNN, during a tour in the United States, that he would likely run for president in the next elections in Uganda. Policies to keep President Museveni longer in power ( including lifting presidential term limit and age limit) have attracted widespread criticism from both opposition politicians such as Wine, and even from within the National Resistance Movement. Wine is currently the face of the youth-led discontent with Museveni’s rule, and might stand a chance in the next elections. However, Kizza Besigye, another opposition candidate, stood a chance as well, but lost the elections nonetheless. His 2006, 2011, and 2016 attempts were marred by irregularities, rigging, and ballot stuffing, but the results were upheld by the constitutional court. It remains to be seen to what extent Wine’s attempts will be met with opposition from the ruling party and Museveni himself.
In the second week of February 2019, Museveni promoted his soon Muhoozi Kainerugaba to Lieutenant General of the Ugandan Army, instigating rumours that Museveni is prepping his son to become the next commander in chief. Muhoozi himself has on several occasions distanced himself from any discussions of Museveni’s succession, arguing he is too busy with military affairs to harbour political ambitions.
