Despite ethnic tensions in its Oromia, Amhara and Somali regional states, Ethiopia is on a steady economic growth path. Large-scale infrastructure development and global positioning, is elevating the Ethiopian economy’s competitiveness. The country has opened the largest airport in Africa, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, with capacity of 22 million passengers annually and yet to wind up one of the largest hydroelectric power projects in Africa, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. However, Ethiopia is faced with mass displacement of people due to ethnic clashes, and attendant humanitarian crisis facing almost 19 million people. Resolving ethnic tensions, sustaining democratic reforms, economic restructuring to ensure equitable wealth distribution, and a boost for private enterprise, will guarantee stability, peace and prosperity for Africa’s fastest growing economy.
