Kiir, Malong disagree on return to Juba

Monday October 1, 2018 – Friday October 5, 2018

South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and former army Chief of General Staff turned rebel leader Gen. Paul Malong Awan have both disagreed on the terms under which Gen. Malong could return to the nation’s capital Juba to re-join the government after almost a year in a self-imposed exile.

The last remaining group of South Sudanese rebels who had been in exile in Democratic Republic of Congo are set to return home, a rebel spokesman and the United Nations said on Thursday. A relapse into war in July 2016 between forces of South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar led to a flight of rebels from the capital Juba. Hundreds fled to the jungles of neighboring Congo where they sought out the protection of United Nations peacekeepers.
