Burundi has suspended all international non-governmental organizations, with Home Affairs Minister Pascal Barandagiye, asking them to re-register in 3 months. Burundi law has ethnic quotas for such organizations requiring them to hire 60 per cent Hutus and 40 per cent Tutsis. Burundi claims some organizations have breached this and other laws governing them. The action by Burundi’s National Security Council stops the work of groups such as Doctors Without Borders and Catholic Relief Services, both of which deliver vital health care to some of the country’s most vulnerable people.
